Hand-drawn like all his animations (Studio Ghibli has only started using computers recently to improve the colours and camera movements), the film has many of the key features of Miyazaki’s work: the love of adventure, the clash between nature, science and progress, the "predestined" love between the two main characters, the corruption of the human spirit, the passion for flight and the extravagant means of transport – as well as the triumph, in the end, of good. At the centre of the story is one of Miyazaki’s many courageous heroines, Sheeta, who fights alongside the young miner Pazu to save the floating island of Laputa, which guards immense treasures and unimaginable power. This background explains why Castle in the Sky, considered one of his masterpieces, is being released on the big screen in Italy sixteen years after its creation (and also why copies of the DVD have now sold out). He then founded Studio Ghibli and became famous when he won a Golden Bear and an Oscar for Spirited Away and a Golden Lion for Career Achievement at the 2005 Venice Film Festival. He worked in the 70s on animations like the Lupin III series, Heidi, Girl of the Alps, Anne of Green Gables and Future Boy Conan, but it wasn’t until 1984 that success came with his film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. ![]() The world has taken a while to understand the genius of this Japanese film-maker.
